If you’ve been online in the past year, you’ve probably seen the headlines about GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.
Maybe you’ve wondered: Should I try one?
Or maybe you’ve thought: I want to lose weight naturally, but is that even possible anymore?
As a registered dietitian for nearly two decades, I’ve had more conversations about GLP-1s in the past 12 months than almost any other topic in my entire career.
And here’s what I’ve noticed: most women are making decisions based on incomplete—or completely inaccurate—information.
Let’s change that.
What Are GLP-1 Medications, Really?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. These medications mimic a hormone your body naturally produces (although the medication is much stronger) that:
- Slows stomach emptying (helping you feel full longer)
- Reduces appetite signals to your brain
- Helps regulate blood sugar levels
Common GLP-1 medications include Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.
Originally developed for Type 2 diabetes, some of these medications are now FDA-approved for weight loss—and the results have been significant. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15-20% of body weight over 68 weeks.
That’s substantial. And for many women, life-changing.
But here’s what the headlines don’t tell you:
The Real Risks of GLP-1 Medications
Every medication has risks. GLP-1s are no exception.
Potential side effects include:
- Nausea and vomiting (especially when starting)
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Fatigue
- Potential for rapid muscle loss along with fat loss
More serious concerns:
- Possible increased risk of thyroid tumors (rare, but documented in animal studies)
- Gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying that persists)
- Nutritional deficiencies if eating is severely reduced
- Weight regain after stopping (studies show most people regain 2/3 of lost weight)
The biggest risk? Treating GLP-1s as a standalone solution.
These medications work best alongside nutrition and lifestyle changes—but many people aren’t getting that support.
What About Natural Weight Loss?
Here’s the truth: natural weight loss is absolutely still possible.
But it requires the right approach—not the restrictive diets that have failed you in the past.
The core components of effective natural weight loss include:
✅ Adequate protein intake – Supports metabolism, preserves muscle, and increases satiety ✅ Balanced meals with fiber – Regulates blood sugar and hunger ✅ Consistent meal timing – Works with your body’s natural rhythms ✅ Strategic movement – Strength training and daily activity (not hours at the gym) ✅ Quality sleep – Directly impacts hunger hormones and metabolism ✅ Stress management – Chronic stress sabotages even the best nutrition plan
Sound simple? It is.
Sound easy? It’s not—especially for ultra-busy women juggling careers, families, and a million other responsibilities.
That’s why the approach matters as much as the components.
The 5 Beliefs Keeping You Stuck
In my years of working with women, I’ve identified five common beliefs that sabotage weight loss efforts:
- “I need to eat perfectly clean” – Perfectionism leads to all-or-nothing cycles
- “Carbs are bad” – Your body needs carbs; the problem is usually portions and types
- “I need hours for meal prep” – Simple meals and modern conveniences can support your goals
- “GLP-1s are cheating” – There’s no cheating in healthcare
- “I just need more willpower” – You need better systems, not more discipline
Each of these beliefs creates unnecessary barriers to success.
So Which Approach Is Right for You?
Here’s my answer after 20 years in this field:
It depends.
GLP-1 medications can be an excellent tool for some women—particularly those with:
- BMI over 30 (or over 27 with weight-related health conditions)
- History of struggling with appetite regulation
- Metabolic conditions like insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes
- Commitment to concurrent nutrition and lifestyle changes
Natural weight loss can be highly effective for women who:
- Prefer a medication-free approach
- Have the time and capacity to focus on habit changes
- Don’t have significant metabolic barriers
- Want to develop long-term skills and autonomy
And here’s what BOTH approaches need:
A sustainable nutrition framework that fits modern life. Simple, foundational habits. Support from someone who understands the science and the reality of being a busy woman.
Because whether you choose medication or not, the fundamentals don’t change: you need a strategy that actually works with your modern lifestyle.
